Under the noon sun, Nico carried a scuffed blue token in his fist and tapped it on the diving board: tik, tik, splonk. He wanted to hear the secret echo his older cousin had promised was “only for people who listen with wet ears.” The community pool smelled like sunscreen and warm rubber sandals. Every tap came back different from the tiles, the ladder, even the leafy trees leaning over the fence.
Nico tried three careful bounces. The board answered with a squeak, a hum, and one rude little burp. “That was not me,” he told the empty pool. Curious now, he tucked the token under his chin, marched to the end, and dropped in knees-first with a magnificent blorp. Water jumped up in floppy crowns, slapped the ladder, and sent rings racing across the shallow end.
Then the twist came bubbling up: the token was not a ticket at all, but a tiny pool-counter, and every splash gave it a new sound. Cannonballs went BONK, toe-dips went pip, and belly flops made the token giggle so hard it rattled. Nico surfaced laughing, held it high, and dared the next swimmer to add a note. If you spot the biggest burst, you may hear Nico’s first tik, tik, splonk hiding inside it.
