Across Shell Cove, Ozzy bounded after the tide’s newest squiggles, his paws kicking cool sand with a skritch-skritch. He wanted to follow every clue before the noon sun climbed over the umbrella tops. A starfish print pointed to a sandcastle. Three bubbly rings pointed back to the foam. “Faster, tide, faster!” Ozzy laughed, whiskers salty with spray.
The game grew wilder. Sailboat bells tinkled far out on the water, and the warm wind rolled a giant spiral shell against his foot. Ozzy leaned close, expecting the sea’s usual whoosh. Instead, something inside gave a papery flap.
Out slid a tiny map, folded as neatly as a gull’s wing. It showed Shell Cove from above, with dots for every odd mark Ozzy had chased—and one bright X tucked under the umbrella’s shadow. Ozzy’s ears sprang high. The tide had not been leaving random clues at all; it had been writing him an invitation.
He tucked the starfish gently beside the map and raced on, following the X with sand popping under his toes. If you spot the spiral shell by Ozzy’s feet, you’ll know where the tide hid its first papery flap.
