Under the glass roof of the conservatory, Ari chased a striped party horn as it rolled between fern pots with a prrp-prrp-prrp. He wanted to find the birthday table before everyone arrived, so he could place the last stack of napkins just right. Warm air smelled like soil, sugar icing, and the orange trees growing in tubs along the wall.
The horn bumped a table leg and gave one bright toot. Out from behind the gift boxes popped three little caretaker mice wearing paper hats made from candy wrappers. “Perfect timing!” squeaked the tallest. They tugged ribbons, pushed confetti into spirals, and pointed Ari toward a cake waiting beneath the bunting.
Then the rooftop windows slid open, and sunlight poured across the table like a map. Every plate, present, balloon string, and candle shadow formed an arrow toward one empty chair with Ari’s napkins already beside it. The mice had not needed a helper; they had been guiding him to his place. Next time you see the striped party horn near the cake, you’ll know exactly where the adventure began: prrp-prrp-prrp.
