Under the basement stairs, Ezra tapped a tiny tin cap he had hammered from a bottle lid. Ping, ping. It was supposed to snuff one candle without smoke, but the party room held seven flames, and every one smelled like warm sugar and wax.
A draft slipped through the laundry chute. The flames leaned left, then right, as if whispering a secret. Ezra set his homemade snuffer on the cake rim, but it rolled around the frosting instead of stopping. The candles followed its path, one after another, until they stood in a bright ring. “Wait,” Ezra breathed, hands sticky with icing. “They’re guarding the wish.”
When the birthday song ended, the ring of flames made one soft whoosh together, no smoky puff at all. Ever since then, birthday candles have stood around the cake like a little parade, holding the wish in the middle until someone is ready to blow. If you spot the candles circling Ezra’s cake, can you keep their secret, too?
