Under the community court’s buzzing lights, Devin taped a row of paper cups to a shoebox and called it his Roar Machine. His challenge was simple: make one clean layup, then tug the string so the cups rattled like a packed arena. The floor smelled like rubber soles and orange slices, and his sneakers squeaked, skritch-skritch, every time he practiced his takeoff.
He tucked the shoebox behind the bench and dashed in from the painted curve. Bounce, step, leap—his fingers guided the ball upward. “Ready, Roar Machine?” he whispered, grinning so hard his cheeks hurt. Before he could pull the string, a huge whoooooosh of cheering burst across the gym.
The twist was sitting in the bleachers: his teammates had found his practice notes and built their own noisemakers from programs, popcorn trays, and one very squeaky foam finger. Devin’s ball kissed the backboard and dropped through, swish. He landed laughing, proud of the ridiculous invention that had started it all.
