Every day after lunch, Luz walked only as far as the blue door, rubbing the smooth brown button in her pocket. It had fallen from Papa’s driving coat, and to Luz it felt like a tiny steering wheel. One day, the sea wind puffed hot and salty through the street, and the button slipped from her fingers, tick-tick-ticking across the stones.
Because of that, Luz followed it past the bakery smell, past the sleepy bench, farther than the blue door. Because of THAT, she heard a little clink under the parked car and had to crouch where the shadows were cool. “I can do one more step,” she whispered. At last she reached in, found the button, and saw it was pointing toward home all along. Next time you see the car by the palm, can you spot the brave little street where Luz followed her tiny steering wheel?
