🎨 How to color it

Layer the coneflower petals in soft lavender, the spiky centers in burnt umber and ochre, the serrated leaves in sage green, and the curling vines in deep teal. Use sharp colored pencils for the seed-head scales and narrow leaf veins, then blend outward on the longer petals to keep their ribbed lines visible. For a subtle twist, let the heart border shift from rose at the top lobes to plum at the pointed tip, as if the garden is holding dusk.

Under the iron ribs of the conservatory, Elara set herself a small, private challenge: count every coneflower petal before the green lamps clicked off. The air smelled of damp soil and lemon oil from the polished benches. She moved from bloom to bloom, whispering numbers into the warm hush, following each long petal, each serrated leaf, each tight bud waiting its turn.

The count kept lengthening. A curled vine pointed her back to a flower she thought she had finished; a seed head broke into tiny repeating scales; a leaf vein forked like a path on a map. Curiosity ran ahead of her pencil. “One more,” she murmured, though the lamps had begun their soft glass tick.

Then the last light tilted through the roof, and the heart-shaped planting bed threw its shadow onto the tiled floor. In the shadow, every gap between petals became another petal, dark and perfect. Elara stopped counting and smiled at the second garden, the one made only of spaces. When the lamps finally clicked off, the conservatory held both answers: the flowers she had counted, and the uncounted petal waiting in the warm hush.
