Under the tall piano, Lena tapped three paper hearts she had cut from an old recital program. Tap, tap, hush. She wanted her handmade melody to sound real before the evening showcase, but the hearts only whispered against the keys. In her pocket lay the smallest red one, creased from being held during every hard lesson.
Lena stepped away from the safe piano bench and crossed the music room. The violin case smelled like warm wood and rosin; the drumhead felt cool as a window. She traded her red heart for a strip of spare bow ribbon, then used the ribbon to tie her paper hearts along the staff she had drawn by hand. “Please sing,” she whispered.
When her baton lifted, the ribbon trembled. The hearts rose into bright little notes, circling the shelves, trophies, drum, and violin before settling back above the piano. Lena came home to the bench with no red heart in her pocket, but with a whole song her hands had made. If you spot the tiniest heart note near the keys, maybe it is still tapping: tap, tap, hush.
