🎨 How to color it

Color the delivery truck bright white with navy trim, the cardboard boxes tan, the brick buildings warm red and gray, and the street trees leafy green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many windows, fire escape rails, sidewalk cracks, and tiny pedestrians, then switch to markers for the truck’s broad side panel. Try a sunset glow between the far skyscrapers so the white truck stands out against a peach-and-blue city canyon.

The story behind this coloring page

The Package That Ticked — Every day, Calder timed the downtown route by the hiss of bus brakes and the warm cardboard smell inside the truck. Read the full story →

Every day, Calder timed the downtown route by the hiss of bus brakes and the warm cardboard smell inside the truck. He wanted to beat his best record before the bakery clock struck four, so he slid boxes to doorways as quick as handclaps: thump, step, stack.

Until one day, a silver pigeon clattered down from a fire escape and landed on the last package. Its brass feet ticked. Its glass eyes flashed. “Wrong nest!” it chirped, then pecked a tiny arrow into the tape. Because of that, Calder opened the address flap and found two labels stuck together. Because of that, he saw the box was not for 123 Pearl Street, but for the roof above it, where a weather maker waited to wind the evening wind.

Calder raced up the narrow stairs with the ticking pigeon on his shoulder and the city roaring below like a sea in a tunnel. At the roof door, a woman in goggles grabbed the box, twisted its key, and sent a cool breeze tumbling between the buildings. Calder laughed, hair flying, exactly where the route needed him. Next time you spot the open truck and stacked boxes, can you guess which one once smelled of warm cardboard and ticked like bus brakes?
