Every evening, after the crowd went home, Orlo padded around the circus ring with his little brass ankle bell wrapped in a sock. He wanted the bell to stay silent, because its tiny ting made his knees remember the tall practice ball. Sawdust smelled warm and sweet under the moonlit tent, and the dark seats seemed to listen.
Until one night, a wind slipped under the canvas and blew the sock away. Ting! The bell rang once, clear as a star. Because of that, the sleepy pigeons in the rafters cooed and fluttered; because of that, the stage lights blinked awake, spilling gold across the striped ball. Orlo touched it with one foot. “Just one step,” he whispered.
The ball rocked. His ears trembled. Then the bell rang again, not sharp, but round and brave. Orlo lifted his trunk and let a silver spray arc into the light. If you spot the tiny bell near his foot, you’ll know why the quiet ring began with one bright ting.
