At the marsh bend, Liora packed smooth mud between cattail stems and tied them with strips of river grass. She wanted her handmade ripple-maker to send perfect circles across the pond for the reed birds’ evening dance. Splish, press, twist—her trunk worked like a busy rope, and the wet clay smelled sharp and green in the sun. When she set the little frame in the water, the circles spread wide, neat as bracelets.
The reed birds hopped closer, their feet ticking on the cattail heads. “Again!” chirped one, and Liora dipped her trunk through the center of her invention. The pond answered with a bubbling note: bloop-lee! Liora froze, then laughed so hard her ears flapped warm air over the water. Nobody had thought to look beneath the ripple-maker, where an old hollow seedpod had been trapped under the mud.
Now every circle carried a song. Liora added two pebbles, one leaf, and a careful thumbprint of trunk-tip mud until the notes bounced bright across the marsh. Her chest felt as round as the ripples: she had made the whole pond play. Next time you see the rings around her trunk, see if you can spot where the handmade music begins—splish, press, twist.
