🎨 How to color it

Color the outer facets ruby red, the narrow center diamonds rose pink, and the small top triangles pale coral. Use sharp colored pencils for the skinny triangle points, turning the page so each straight edge feels easy to follow. Try shading one side of every facet darker than the other, as if a secret light is shining from the center seam.

Deep under Bell Quarry, where footsteps clicked like beetle shells, Ione carried one cold lantern with no flame inside. She had set herself a dare: walk to the hush-stone alone and bring back the first light it gave, without calling for the older miners. The air smelled of wet rock and iron dust, and every wall held thin black cracks that seemed to listen.

At the hush-stone, Ione touched the lantern to the dark. Nothing happened. Then a whisper slid from crack to crack: “Choose one line.” Her hand shook, but she traced the smallest split with her thumb. A red spark ran along it, then another, then many, breaking the dark into bright little panes.

“I’m not leaving you plain,” Ione whispered. The stone warmed into a heart, all angles and secret paths. Ever since, hearts keep facets, because the first brave light needed cracks to travel; next time you see the center seam, can you spot the first line Ione chose?
