Every evening, Ione climbed to the attic studio, where dust smelled like cedar and rain tapped the slanted roof, and shaped wire into clasps for her first necklace. She wanted the closing piece to be worthy of all the tiny glass beads she had cut and polished by hand. Until one evening, the clasp sprang apart and rolled beneath the old standing mirror.
Because of that, Ione knelt in the blue lamplight and saw the mirror’s cracked back, not her face. Because of that, she noticed a pattern scratched into the wood: the same angles her braids made when she pinned them away from her work. She traced the lines with a silver tool, listening to the soft tick-tick of rain, and bent a new clasp from the pattern hidden where nobody had thought to look.
At last, the necklace closed with a quiet click. Ione held it in her palm, warm from her fingers, and felt the still pride of a thing made, not found, while rain tapped the slanted roof.
