🎨 How to color it

Try emerald green for the T. rex’s triangular body plates, slate gray for the jagged mountains, golden yellow for the round sun, and deep leafy green for the ferns. Use sharp colored pencils for the dinosaur’s many polygon sections, coloring one triangle at a time so the black angles stay crisp. For a handmade crystal look, shade every other body triangle a little darker and make the circular joints glow with amber or turquoise.

By sunrise, Ivo had licked three cactus needles flat and tied them to a vine, trying to carve a festival costume before the drumstones began. Scritch, scritch, snap—the vine broke again, and the warm dust smelled like pepper. His little arms could not reach the middle of his back, and every leaf cape he made slid off his tail. Then a blue map-beetle rolled from under a shard of quartz and clicked, “You are cutting like rain. Cut like lightning.”

That sounded like a secret, so Ivo bent close. The beetle dragged one leg through wet clay: triangle, triangle, triangle, each point leaning on the next. Ivo pressed flat stones into the clay marks, nudged them with his claws, and breathed hot air until they hardened. The pieces locked together with a tiny clack-clack, light flashing across them like captured noon. He had made his own bright hide.

When the other dinosaurs came over the ridge, nobody asked who helped tie it. They saw Ivo stand tall in his fitted stone triangles, and the mountain shadows copied the pattern across the flats. Ever since, the crystal flats have cracked in triangles after rain—and if you spot Ivo’s sharp little points, keep the beetle’s lightning secret.
