🎨 How to color it

Color the helper’s robe warm ivory, the injured traveler’s wrap pale blue, the donkey soft gray, and the distant hills sage green with tan ridges. Use sharp colored pencils for the robe folds, bandage layers, reins, and mountain lines, then switch to lighter side-strokes for the wide road. Add a mischievous sunset glow behind the tiny village so the quiet donkey casts a cool purple shadow.

Each market morning, Oren counted travelers on the Jericho road: three merchants, two goats, one priest with sandals that slapped slap-slap in the dust. What he really wanted was to solve the rattle in a Samaritan’s saddlebag. It clicked at every bend—tink, tonk, tunk—and Oren’s curiosity chased it faster than his feet. Until one day, rough men burst from behind the rocks, grabbed his coins, and left him dizzy beside the road, tasting dust and worry.

Because of that, Oren heard the rattle come back, slow and steady. Because of that, he watched the Samaritan kneel, rinse his cuts with sharp-smelling oil, and wrap his head while the donkey snorted as if keeping a secret. “Hold still,” the Samaritan said, “unless you want a bandage shaped like a noodle.” Oren almost laughed, which hurt.

At last the saddlebag popped open. Out rolled not coins, not jewels, but Oren’s own little counting stones, stolen by a magpie and hidden where nobody had thought to look. The donkey had been carrying the mystery all along. Next time you notice the winding road and the patient donkey, can you hear it—tink, tonk, tunk?
