Every day before the sun warmed the red canyon, Vera rolled between stone fins and recorded the hush for her own tiny memory box. She liked the soft crunch under her wheels, the cold bite in her metal joints, and the way dawn made the cliffs glow like banked coals.
Until one day, a thin note rose from a cracked black rock: wheeee-oo, clear as a glass flute. Vera stopped so fast her six wheels skidded. “Who’s singing?” she whispered into the dusty air. A bead of buried ice, waking in the sun, whistled again through a pinhole in the stone.
Because of that, Vera aimed every camera and microphone at the rock. Because of THAT, the sound bounced from cliff to cliff, and her signal dish sent it up to the waiting orbiters, then across the dark to Earth. Finally, children in faraway rooms heard Mars sing at sunrise, and Vera’s memory box felt too small for such joy. Next time you see her by the cracked rock, listen for the red canyon’s hush turning into a shared wheeee-oo.
