Under the warm kitchen window, Nico heard one lonely crunch in his breakfast bowl. He wanted one more crispy bit, the kind that snapped like a tiny twig, so he nosed past the potted aloe and padded across the cold tile toward the pantry. The door was shut. On the way back, his favorite chew bone bumped his paw, and he carried it to his bowl like a prize. Then the bowl wobbled. Scratch-scritch. Something whispered underneath.

Nico tipped the empty bowl with his nose. Taped to the bottom was a folded paper that smelled faintly of oatmeal and crayons: FOR THE SMALL HUNGRY ONE WHO VISITS AFTER SUNSET. Behind the plant pot, a little gray field mouse watched with round black eyes. Nico’s tail thumped once, very softly. “You can have this,” he whispered, and pushed his bone behind the pot where no person would see.

By morning, the bone was gone. In its place lay one golden crunchy bit, saved in the center of Nico’s bowl. He ate it slowly while sunlight striped the tiles, and if you spot the plant by the window, you may know where the small hungry one came from.
