The softest room in the house hummed when the wind touched the tall windows. Nico rolled his star ball to the middle of the big cushion, pressed both paws around it, and listened for the tiny rattle inside: tik, tik, hush. He wanted the sound to match the swish of the curtains, the leafy whisper from the pot, and the far-off murmur of roofs beyond the glass.
He nudged the ball left. Tik-tik. He nudged it right. Hush-tik. Afternoon light slid over the sofa blanket like warm milk, and the framed faces on the side table seemed to lean closer. “Almost,” Nico whispered, holding his breath until his whiskers tickled.
Then someone blinked back from the window—a puppy with enormous ears, bright eyes, and paws on a star ball too. Nico froze. The other puppy froze. When Nico wagged, the window puppy wagged, and the curtains swished at the very same time. The room had not been waiting for him to find its tune; it had been playing with him all along. Nico tucked his chin beside the ball, where the cushion dipped just right, and if you spot the starry ball between his paws, you may hear the softest room hum: tik, tik, hush.
