🎨 How to color it

Layer the central galaxy in deep indigo and violet, give the ringed planet pale aqua oceans with silver rings, and tint the small stars warm butter yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many star dots and narrow spiral bands, following each curve from the white center outward. For a mischievous twist, hide a repeating color pattern along one galaxy arm, as if the stars are secretly keeping score.

The story behind this coloring page

Vera’s Slowest Star Game — Beside the observation glass, Vera invented the slowest game in the ship: choose one tiny amber star in the great spiral, then wait until another amber star appeared on the same curling arm. Read the full story →

Beside the observation glass, Vera invented the slowest game in the ship: choose one tiny amber star in the great spiral, then wait until another amber star appeared on the same curling arm. The engines hummed like a sleepy cat, and the recycled air smelled faintly of mint tea and warm wires. She kept score with cookie crumbs lined along her sleeve, which was not regulation and therefore improved the game.

Hours turned soft. Violet dust lanes drifted past the window; a ringed planet tilted by like a polite eavesdropper. Vera did not hurry. She had discovered that impatience made every star look the same, while waiting gave each speck a ridiculous little personality.

Then the amber stars blinked in order: one, two, three, four—exactly matching her crumb score. Vera froze with a crumb halfway to her mouth. The spiral had not been scenery. It had been watching her invent rules, then quietly inventing its own.

She raised a new crumb. Far away, a tiny star winked first. Vera laughed so softly the glass fogged, and the slowest game in the ship finally let the galaxy take its turn.
