🎨 How to color it

Color the rainbow red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, then make the pumpkins bright orange, the smiling bats soft purple, and the moon lemon yellow. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big rainbow bands and round pumpkins, and don't worry if little hands color past the cloud lines. For a Halloween surprise, shade the sky pale twilight blue so the orange jack-o'-lantern face glows warmly below the rainbow.

Under the bare orchard trees, Gus rubbed his carved cheeks and tried to make one brave glow before moonrise. The pumpkin patch smelled like damp leaves and curly vines, and the hills went hush-hush in the cold. Above the clouds, something pale arched through the dark, but it had no colors. Two bats squeaked past. “Who forgot the sky?” Gus whispered.

He squeezed his grin tighter. A warm orange spark slipped out, then another, floating up like tiny fireflies. Gus sent them quietly, one by one, until red, gold, green, blue, and violet woke across the arch. No rooster crowed. No scarecrow clapped. But ever since that secret night, Halloween rainbows shine over pumpkin patches when a jack-o’-lantern shares its glow with nobody watching—can you spot the bats who kept Gus’s secret?
