🎨 How to color it

Color the evergreen deep pine green, the ornaments cranberry red and gold, the snowy hills pale blue, and the huge rainbow in classic red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny garland beads, snowflake patterns, and little stars, then switch to smoother strokes on the wide rainbow bands. Try making the tree glow warmer than the chilly hills, as if its handmade decorations are lighting the snow from inside.

Behind the shuttered cocoa stall, Orla counted her string of plain wooden beads: click, click, click. One spot stayed empty near the top. She wanted a bright topper bead before the Snowbound Square bell rang, so she tucked the string under her coat and followed the only footprints leaving the market, out where the snow squeaked like clean chalk.

Past the dark bakery window, a moon-moth peddler sat on an overturned sled, selling nothing but jars of leftover sunset. “Trade?” he whispered. Orla had no coins, only her warm mittens. She handed them over, fingers prickling in the cold, and chose seven tiny drops of color. They were sticky, sharp-smelling, like orange peel and rain.

Back at the square, Orla rubbed each drop into a bead until her hands shone red, gold, green, and blue. The empty spot did not get one bead after all; it got the whole string, arcing from branch to branch. When the bell rang, even the moon seemed to lean closer. If you ever spot that snowy trail curling away from the tree, keep the secret: it began with click, click, click.
