Every day, Pip scrubbed the big river letters before the ducks came through: H, U, D, S, O, N. Swish-swish went his rag, and splash-splap went the water under the stone bridge. He wanted the letters clean enough for the morning boats to grin at. Until one day, the O gave a sneezy little clunk.
Because of that, Pip poked his brush inside the O. Out rolled six tiny seed cakes wrapped in reed paper, smelling like honey and mud. Because of THAT, he tucked one cake beside each cattail nest before anyone saw him, even the bossy duck with the squeaky quack. At noon, the hungry ducklings found breakfast and peeped like whistles. Pip only wiped his nose and scrubbed N extra shiny. Next time the river letters look bright, check the O—something kind may have gone swish-swish there.
