🎨 How to color it

Shade the ichthyosaur slate blue, the tall kelp olive green, the spiral shell sandy tan, and the tiny fish silver-gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the teeth, eye rings, shell bands, and thin seaweed edges, then switch to lighter side-strokes for the open water. Try a pale turquoise wash behind the tail and bubbles so the dark blue body feels like it is cutting through clear ancient water.

Every evening, Vesper skimmed the ammonite flats and counted the spiral shells without touching the sand. One, two, three—her challenge was to finish before the cold blue light left the water. The kelp hissed softly around her fins, and each shell smelled faintly of salt and old rain.

Until one day, a cloud of silver minnows scattered under her nose, too thin to flash properly. Because of that, Vesper lost her place at shell forty-seven. Because of that, she noticed the minnows circling the biggest striped shell, where a hidden current breathed out warm, plankton-rich water.

She could keep counting, or she could break the rule nobody knew she had made. Vesper nudged the shell with her long snout. “Here,” she whispered, and the minnows poured into the warm swirl like sparks into dusk. By moonrise, her count was gone, but the flats flickered with fed, silver bellies. If you follow the bubbles past the striped shell, you may find where Vesper left her uncounted gift in the cold blue light.
