Every morning, Quill trotted the palm flat and flicked his tail past the same warm boulder, making up rules for Plate-Flag Dash. One plate meant “turn,” two plates meant “freeze,” and a full wiggle meant “run like the ground is popping!” The ferns hissed against his knees, and dry seedpods clicked under his toes.
Until one day, a sea wind shoved the palms sideways and blew Quill’s game calls across the flat. Because of that, three tiny hatchlings answered from behind the boulder, chirping as if his orange plates were trail signs. Because of that, Quill had to lead them through snapping fern shadows to the shelter ridge before the dust gusts arrived. His knees wobbled, but he lifted every plate high. “Follow the flame line!” he called.
Finally, the hatchlings tumbled into the ridge hollow just as the wind boomed past like a giant drum. Quill stood beside the warm boulder, heart thump-thumping, and made one last full wiggle for run-like-the-ground-is-popping; next time you spot those tall plates, can you tell which way his game is pointing?
