Under the warm leaf-blanket, Nellie sniffed the air. Somewhere beyond her nap hollow floated a honey-sweet smell, and she wanted just one good sniff before the sun slid away.
She tiptoed down the garden path—shush, shush, shush through the grass. A prickly stem tickled her nose, and a burr stuck to her tail, but she kept going. Near the tallest flower, a butterfly flicked its wings and whispered, “Closer.” Nellie bent down. Inside the flower, where nobody ever peeked, three tiny beetles were humming her name into the petals.
Nellie carried the smell back on her nose and the hum in her chest. Her hollow felt warmer now, as if the garden had saved her a seat. If you spot the flower by her smile, keep the secret: that is where Nellie first heard she belonged.
