Each morning, Kip hopped from cloud puff to cloud puff, tapping every rainbow stripe before the sun warmed his whiskers. “Red, orange, yellow—zoom!” he chirped, trying to beat his fastest dash.
One windy morning, the rainbow hummed like a loose guitar string. Tiny star-holes had opened along the arch, and cold air whistled through them. Kip could keep racing, but the moon-mice would cross there at nap time with their crumb carts. So he pressed his little horn to each hole—plink, sparkle, seal! Because of that, his paws grew chilly; because of that, he missed his record.
At last, the wind stopped. Far below, bells jingled as the moon-mice rolled safely across, never seeing Kip tucked behind a cloud. Next time you spot the hearts by his rainbow, maybe you’ll know why Kip’s whiskers still shine from his secret rainbow dash.
