The wind had just started whisk-whisking through the dry grass when Vesper tapped his curly stem and made up a brand-new game: Moon-Path Dash. He would roll only where the moon painted silver on the hills, curve around every stone, and call “spark!” whenever a star fit between two bare branches. The old tree creaked like a ship’s mast, spiders bounced on their threads, and Vesper felt the ground hum under his round orange sides as he zipped from shine to shadow.
The game grew faster. Bats flicked like ink drops over the ridge, and Vesper added a rule: duck under the bat, pass the crooked cross, grin at the moon. “Spark!” he shouted, because three stars lined up over the webbed branch. Then a soft whoooosh swept past him, cool as fog and smelling faintly of rain on stone. Three ghosts were not drifting at random—they were tracing the same Moon-Path Dash in the air, using moonbeams instead of hills.
Vesper laughed so hard his candle wobbled. “You found the sky route!” The ghosts twirled, the bats zigzagged, and even the moon seemed to smile wider as everyone dashed in the place that fit them best: roots below, wings above, wheels of pumpkin in between. Next time you spot the silver path by the crooked tree, see if you can tell which player has just called “spark!”
