Under the oak roots, Jayden tapped three pebbles beside a tiny twig door. Tap, tap, tap! He wanted to carry the morning chirp to the treetop birds, but the door stayed round and quiet, smelling of damp bark and acorn caps.
A red bird whistled from a branch. Two nest eggs warmed in straw. Jayden counted fallen leaves, then counted them again, letting the soft wind swish through his name. At last, a shiny beetle rolled out from under a pebble and clicked, “Wait for the fourth tap.”
Jayden tapped once more. The twig door popped open with a woody creak, and the beetle led him through a root tunnel that rang like a drum. Next time you spot the little door below Jayden’s letters, listen for tap, tap, tap—and one more.
