🎨 How to color it

Color the heart pillow soft rose with sage green leaf details, the writer’s cardigan oatmeal beige, the chairs muted teal, and the tall palm deep green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many palm leaves, hair strands, shelf books, and tiny markings on the heart, then fill the chair cushions with smoother strokes. Try a warm lamp-glow effect by shading pale gold around the notebook and leaving the shelves and vases in cooler clay and blue-gray tones.

In the back room of Blue Fern Bookshop, where floorboards sighed and dried lavender slept in a bowl, Sarai opened her notebook to invent a new game. She called it Hush-and-Answer: write one question, sit very still, and wait for the room to reply. She wanted the perfect words for the little sign by the empty chair, the one meant for anyone who came in feeling out of place.

The shelves gave only papery ticks. The palm brushed the wall with a soft shush-shush. Sarai wrote, What should the sign say? and the heart-shaped pillow beside her seemed to puff up, as if it had swallowed a warm secret. “Are you answering?” she whispered.

She pressed the notebook to her knee and listened harder. From the pillow came the smallest sound: not a voice, but the hush of held stories, the kind people carry before they know where to set them down. Sarai wrote, Sit here. You already belong. The pillow settled into the chair with a gentle crease, and ever since, heart pillows have kept quiet places ready for tired stories; next time you spot the leafy heart, see if it looks full of someone’s welcome.
