Every evening, Darla counted the boba pearls at the bottom of her cup while the festival stall grew quiet: one soft tap, two soft taps, all the way to twenty. She wanted the moon-boba count perfect before the last paper lantern blinked out, but one night a silver moth drifted through the bunting and landed on her striped straw. Its wings smelled faintly of rain and sugar. “I’m carrying the moon’s taste,” it whispered, “but I have nowhere to pour it.”
Because of that, Darla lifted her lid just enough for the moth to shake in a drop of pale light. Because of THAT, every pearl began to glow, not bright like lamps, but deep and round like secrets underwater. The jars on the shelves chimed, the sleeping cat opened one eye, and customers who had been walking home turned back, drawn by the hushy sparkle.
At last Darla stopped counting and passed out cups until the whole lane sipped the same cool wonder. If you spot the little cat by the bottles, imagine it listening for one soft tap, two soft taps, all the way to twenty.
