Under the old acacia, the best leaves always hung just beyond trunk-reach. Zazie stretched until her toes pressed warm dust, but the sweet green tips waved higher, whispering shh-shh in the dry breeze. She wanted one perfect sprig for the evening chew-circle, so she stepped out from the cool herd shadow and followed a drooping branch around the tree.
On the far side, the ground prickled with fallen twigs. Zazie paid for her adventure with one scratched knee and a sneeze full of yellow pollen. A tall giraffe named Finch was already there, holding the same branch in her spotted mouth. “Wait,” Finch mumbled. From inside a twist of leaves came a tiny tik-tik-tik, like rain in a seedpod.
Zazie lifted the branch gently instead of tugging. Hidden in the fork, where nobody ever thought to look, sat a woven nest lined with silver grass and three speckled eggs. She and Finch carried the branch back without breaking it, leaves and secret together. At the chew-circle, Zazie had no perfect sprig—only the quiet news that the acacia had room for everyone. Can you find the branch that still whispers shh-shh?
