Behind the cider barn, Zadie climbed the square hay bale because it was exactly one tail higher than brave. Dry straw prickled her paws, pumpkins curled their stems like question marks, and leaves skittered over the dirt with a papery shush. She opened her mouth for her first moon-meow. Only a squeak came out: “Mip.”
The moon did not laugh. The stars did not laugh. But from inside the left pumpkin came a tiny, fizzy snort. “Again!” chirped a voice. Zadie froze, whiskers straight as broom bristles. A cricket wearing a pumpkin seed like a hat peeked from the stem curl and bowed so low he nearly tipped into the rind. “I’m Brindle, official echo of autumn.”
Zadie tried again. “Mrrrow?” Brindle answered, “Prr-ump!” The hay bale rustled, the right pumpkin hummed, and three leaves bounced as if they had knees. Zadie’s next meow came out round and shiny, not huge, just hers. If you spot the kitten between the pumpkins, keep your ears ready for one tail-higher-than-brave “mrrrow.”
