Under the rustly maple, Pip scratched a circle in the leaves and made a new game: Mystery Drop. He would close his eyes, hear one plink, sniff the cold nut smell, and guess what had fallen. “Drop the next secret!” he called to the quiet branches. Plip came a bare acorn, smooth as a pebble. Plop came a leaf. Then—tup!—something landed with a tiny woven cap stuck on top.
Pip held it in both paws. The cap smelled like bark dust and moonlight. High above, the shyest cloud slid away, and the stars winked holes of silver between the branches. Pip whispered, “Acorns need hats, so the night can find them.” Ever since then, acorns have worn little caps before they tumble down. Next time you see the squirrel’s big acorn, can you spot the secret hat that fell with a tup?
