🎨 How to color it

Color the big uppercase Q royal purple, the lowercase q lavender, the quail chestnut brown with cream feather tips, and the daisies sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the quail’s scalloped feathers and tall flower stems, then switch to broader strokes for the rolling hills and open sky. Try a pale blue-to-white sky gradient behind the smiling sun so the purple letters feel extra bold.

Before the sun cleared the cloud banks, Zadie pressed her tiny feet into the dewy path and set out to mark every quiet bend with a Q. She carried violet petal ink in a nutshell cup, and each curved sign shone softly beside the grasses. Bees made a low zzz in the daisies. The tall letter on the hill held the morning light like a bowl.

By noon, the path had gathered loops: one by the fern patch, one near the smooth stones, one where the wind smelled of clover. Zadie did not call anyone over. She simply tucked crumbs of grain beneath the leaves for smaller travelers and painted another Q where the trail curved out of sight. “For whoever comes after,” she whispered.

Then a breeze lifted the tail of the little q. Under its curl, where nobody had thought to look, lay folded seed packets, each one labeled in careful ant-sized writing: Queen Anne’s lace, quickgrass, quince blossom. Zadie laughed so softly the clouds seemed to lean down. She planted her crumbs with the secret seeds, and by evening the quiet bends were promises; next time you follow the winding path, see if you can find where the little q kept its gift.
