Every evening, Vesper climbed the keeper’s stair and named one bright thing before lighting the lamp: salt on the rail, kelp-smell, the hush of foam below. Then she invented Borrowed Wings, a game of matching each gull’s turn with someone she missed, until one day the birds circled in impossible pairs. Because of that, she rang the small bell; because of that, doors opened along the cliff path and neighbors came carrying mugs, shawls, and astonished silence. At last the lamp bloomed, and the joy she could not hold alone shone outward with the salt on the rail.
