🎨 How to color it

Try emerald green on the beetle’s shell plates, amber on the segmented antennae, deep brown on the six jointed legs, and black for the tiny claw tips. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow grooves and little texture marks, coloring each body plate from its outer edge toward the center. For a mischievous twist, make the two oval patches on the wing covers glow in matching gold, like secret game buttons.

Under the warm old fence rail, Quibble tapped his claws on his shell plates: tik-tik, tok-tok, TIK. He had just invented Shell-Button League, a game where every bump on your back got a sound and every sound got a silly face. Sap smelled sweet in the cracks, and dust stuck to his feet like flour. “Left plate laughs, right plate sneezes!” he announced, wiggling his long antennae so hard they nearly tied themselves in a knot.

Soon the rail joined in. Tok came from under Quibble’s belly. Tik-tik answered from the grain of the wood. He froze, then grinned. The fence was not copying him; a row of tiny bark mites underneath had been using the same taps to choose their marching snacks. Quibble added one new rule: if the rail answers, everybody wins. Next time you see his raised claws and curving antennae, you’ll know he is listening for that first warm tik-tik under the fence rail.
