Under the bell tower’s cool shadow, Pippa rubbed her bent silver moon-pin until it clicked like a tiny tooth. She needed one sky-thread from the highest star-catcher to mend her torn sleeping leaf before dawn, and the pin was the only thing the star-catcher accepted. Everyone knew the tower stairs smelled of owl feathers and old rain. Pippa went anyway, but only after whispering, “Don’t tell my knees.”
Halfway up, the wind slid between the stones and stole the pin from her feet. It rang once, ping! then stuck in a crack above a sleeping field mouse. To reach it, Pippa had to fold her wide wings tight and creep through dust that tickled her antennae. She got the pin back, but one silver edge snapped off.
At the top, the star-catcher held out a shining thread. Then the broken pin flashed, and moonlight poured through its little dent, making a safe bright path all the way home. Pippa kept the pin, carried the borrowed glow instead, and mended her leaf with light. If you spot the smallest crescent tucked in her wings, that is where her secret courage still clicks like a tiny tooth.
