Under the date palms, Samir tied one brass lantern to his small camel’s saddle and whispered his challenge: “I’ll bring back the evening light before the first star.” The lantern was dark, and the dunes smelled warm and dusty. His comfortable mat waited behind him, but he stepped past the last palm anyway. Sand slipped into his sandals, hiss-hiss, and the camel’s tassels tapped like tiny drums.
At the ridge, a cool wind found the lantern. Ting! A hidden chime rang inside it, and far below, another ting answered from the tents. Samir hurried home with sore feet and no flame at all—only the ringing secret. When he lifted the lantern, every family brought theirs out, laughing as the chimes called back and forth. The camp filled with shared light. Next time you see the little lantern, can you hear the first ting under the date palms?
