Under the round morning sun, Nia carried a smooth pebble to the tall acacia by the dry riverbed. She wanted to tap one leaf higher than her hand had ever reached. The grass brushed her knees with a shh-shh sound, and far off, zebra stripes wavered in the heat. Nia took one small step onto a flat stone. Then another. “Almost,” she whispered.
A giraffe lowered her long neck and nibbled the branch, making the leaves dance down to Nia’s fingers. As Nia touched the leaf, a brown seedpod tucked behind it gave a tiny rattle. Not a bug. Not a bird. Inside were three little seeds, humming softly like rain before it arrives. Nia held her breath, then smiled at the hill, the giraffe, and the listening grass. Next time you see the high branch, can you find the hidden place where the hum began under the round morning sun?
