🎨 How to color it

Color the cross a soft antique gold, the poinsettias deep crimson, the holly leaves forest green, and the pinecones warm chestnut brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight scrollwork, ribbon patterns, and leaf veins, filling the larger cross panels only after the tiny curls are done. Try a pale blue glow around the eight-point star so the warm flowers and gold cross feel lit from above.

Under the choir loft, where brass bells smelled of lemon oil and cold iron, Liora invented the Game of Waiting Stars. She would count every star she could see without making a sound; if one seemed to wink back, she could ring the smallest bell once before bedtime. Seven stars waited in the frosty chapel windows. The eighth stayed dark. Liora tucked the bell cloth in her sleeve and slipped down the spiral stair to find it.

Past the candle cupboard, past the draft that hissed like “shhh,” she followed a thin silver glimmer to the locked screen behind the flower stand. Her knees chilled on the stone while she waited for the moon to move. Minutes stretched. Her fingers ached. At last, moonlight slid through the high window and touched the Christmas cross, waking a star at its crown and a tiny one below, hidden among the curls. “There you are,” Liora whispered.

She rang no bell that night. Instead, she carried back a quiet secret: some stars answer only after the room has finished rushing. Next time you see the cross with its flowers and curling ribbons, can you find the eighth star that waited under the choir loft?
