🎨 How to color it

Layer the lantern panels in antique gold and smoky amber, the pine needles in deep forest green, the holly berries in cranberry red, and the porch wood in warm walnut. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny spirals, checkerboards, berry clusters, and needle strokes, saving broader marker fills for the plank walls and railing. Try a faint blue-gray glow around the lantern glass so the warm metalwork feels newly lit against the cool porch.

Beside the cedar wall, Vale rubbed a plain brass latch until it smelled of pennies and pine resin, wanting only one clear pane to finish the lantern begun before grief made their hands slow. They stepped from the bench to the cold veranda, traded their last spool of wire for etched glass, and let the frost bite through both gloves on the walk back. At dusk, the latch clicked into place with a small, certain sound. The lantern was uneven, scroll-marked, unmistakably theirs; beneath the cedar wall, Vale warmed both hands around the light they had made.
