Every evening, Corvin sorted the Yulewood chorus by pitch: wrens in the bramble, finches near the birch, himself on the high holly where the cold smelled of sap and iron snow. Then one day, while rehearsing his grand opening trill, a pinecone dropped beside him and said, “Tenors are drafty.”
Because of that, Corvin pecked a new seating chart into the snow, giving the rude pinecone a central position as “acorn baritone.” Because of that, every singer crowded the branch to see, shaking loose flakes, needles, and several offended berries, until the whole thicket rang with accidental percussion. Finally, Corvin stopped conducting and joined the racket, perfectly placed among the nonsense, his crest bright as a joke no one wished to explain.
