🎨 How to color it

Color the striped signpost pole candy-cane red and white, the four arrow boards warm pine brown, the fir trees deep evergreen, and the little cabin buttery yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the snowflake arms and cabin windows, then switch to broader strokes for the wide blank arrows and rolling snowbanks. Try making each arrow point to a different “place” by adding tiny colored words or symbols inside the empty boards.

At the white crossroads, Odele pressed her mitten to the striped pole and promised herself four names before the moon cleared the fir tops. North smelled of pine pitch. East held the warm sugar scent of chimney smoke. South made the snow squeak under her boots. West was so still she heard one flake tick against her hood.

She wrote no words yet. Odele only listened, letting her pencil rest against each empty arrow while the forest gathered blue shadows. More flakes drifted down, large and lacy, and they did not fall straight. They curved, paused, and spun beside the boards as if choosing.

Then Odele understood: the signs were not waiting for her names. They were asking the snow where to go. She drew a tiny swirl on one arrow, a star on another, a curl, then a dot. The flakes answered by sailing off in four soft streams, toward pine, smoke, squeak, and stillness. If you find the empty arrows, can you guess which quiet way the next snowflake will choose?
