Every summer mile, Vero pressed a sticker into her notebook: bridge, pine, tunnel, curve. She wanted the page full before the car reached the high pass, but the road kept bending away between dusty grass and stone. Then, at a fork smelling of warm tar and sap, a wooden sign creaked though no wind blew. Its arrows read MOUNTAINS and ADVENTURE, and a quiet voice asked, “Which one are you actually looking for?”
Because of that, Vero stopped counting. Because of that, the car idled while everyone listened to the tick-tick of cooling metal and far-off hawks. Her thumb hovered over the next blank sticker spot. She had never chosen the road before. Finally, Vero pointed to the arrow that made her stomach flutter smallest and brightest. “Adventure,” she said, and the tires whispered forward; if you follow the painted road with your eyes, you can almost hear that sign answer again.
