Every day, Zadie sprinted the upper service path with fresh score cards tucked under her arm, trying to make Section 1 cheer with Section 40 before the eighth inning ended. Her sneakers slapped metal stairs, popcorn butter floated up from the seats, and the big board hummed, GAME DAY in bold white letters.
Until one day, the left-field numbers jammed. Zadie climbed the rattly ladder behind the old light tower to fix the panel, and a loose bolt rolled into a narrow slot nobody used anymore. Inside waited a paper megaphone, folded small as a hot dog wrapper, with penciled words: SHOUT HERE WHEN JOY IS TOO BIG.
Because of that, Zadie shouted, “North side, answer south side!” Her voice blasted through a forgotten speaking tube under the lights. Because of that, the cheer bounced across the roof, down the aisles, and onto the grass just as the batter cracked the ball toward the wall. By the time he slid into third, every section was roaring the same wild rhythm. If you follow the tallest light towers next time, can you find where Zadie’s secret roar began?
