Past the third bend of the riverside park, Vesper pressed his nose to the damp grass and began his newest game: Map of Maybe. The rules were private, obviously. A paw-shaped clover meant left, a beetle shell meant hurry, and any butterfly meant follow until curiosity got ahead of sense. He wanted one perfect new rule before the fountain clock clicked noon. So he stepped off his usual warm lawn, through peppery weeds and under trees that whispered like paper bags. The price was small but sharp: a burr tucked itself into his ankle fur and traveled with him like a question.
At the narrow path by the water, a white butterfly landed on the burr. Vesper held still. The butterfly tugged, the burr loosened, and beneath it clung a flat seed, striped like a tiny bone. Not a sign to chase, then. A sign to carry back. By noon, Vesper returned with no grand answer, only the seed in his mouth and a new rule humming in his chest: when Maybe stops moving, listen. Past the third bend, the secret map had grown a place to begin.
