At first light, Aster carried a dry little seed pod between his teeth, racing under fern shadows while it clicked like rain on stone. He had found it after the night winds, and every click seemed to say, higher, farther, hurry. Vines brushed his neck; warm leaf-smell rose as he reached the canopy overlook and lifted the pod toward the sun. Then the pod answered—not with seeds, but with the voices of beetles inside, drumming a bright welcome. Aster laughed so loudly the whole ridge rattled along, higher, farther, hurry.
