Every day after lunch, Cosmo ran the skinny path between the poppies, tapping three stones, ducking one bent seedpod, and reaching the far fence before the church bell went bong. The field smelled peppery and warm, and grasshoppers clicked like tiny castanets. Then Cosmo invented Poppy Shadow Tag: no foot could touch a flower’s shadow, and anyone who did had to shout, “Pollen pickle!”
Because of that, the baker’s twins zigzagged after him, shrieking with laughter. Because of THAT, the goat cart swerved around them, bumped the fence, and sent the village bell rope flipping right over a tall poppy stem. The bell gave one offended clonk and stopped. No bell meant no supper signal, no closing the hen gates, and, worst of all, no finish line for Cosmo’s game.
At last Cosmo changed the rules. Everyone had to move only where the path made a wiggle, while he crawled under the poppies and tickled the stem until the rope slid free. Bong! The sound rolled over the hills, and everyone cheered, even the goat. If you follow the wiggliest strip between the flowers, can you spot where Cosmo’s silly game found exactly where it belonged?
