In the ribbon workshop after dusk, Elowen cut pink scraps by lamplight, wanting one garland no catalog could copy. The room smelled of cotton starch and warm paper, and every bow on the wall seemed to hold its breath. When her scissors nicked the bottom of an old ribbon box, a folded square slid out: a secret map of checks, dots, and slanting stripes. She pressed the pattern onto her first paper heart, square by square, and the small thing looked proud to have been made by hand. Ever since, in that workshop, hearts have worn plaid.
