Each morning, before the bread carts rattled over the stones, Princess Seraphina tried to collect one hundred different helloes without repeating a single one. She whispered “morning” to the sleepy fountain, bowed to the armor that smelled faintly of polish, and tapped three quick knocks on the kitchen door.
Then one day, the wind carried in a hush instead of voices. The visiting hillside children stood beyond the gate, wide-eyed and quiet, while Prince Calder waited beside her with his hand half-raised. Because Seraphina had saved all her best helloes for counting, none felt big enough. Because of that, she opened both arms and called, “Help me make one!”
Calder waved high. The guards tapped spears. The towers answered with bright flags, flap-flap-flap, and the children laughed until the stone steps seemed to hum. At last Seraphina stopped counting and let the joy spill outward; if you can spot the raised hands, you can almost hear her hundred helloes beginning before the bread carts rattled over the stones.
